Singlo (Early one)

Whenever I get stressed I go to my work shop and repair a floor spring. This one is an Edwardian period, early, heavy duty Singlo from Parker Winder & Achurch. It was in a very bad state of repair and I struggled to get it up and running as I had no spares for this one.

Although the Singlo had some wear to take care of the above shot shows one of the worse problems I come across. Through over tightening of the adjustment needle in an attempt, by the none experienced, to slow the door speed they inadvertently snap the adjuster leaving it in the barrel of the piston.

On this rare occasion the remnants came out after using a fine stud extractor and some heat.

You should also be able to see in this shot the corrosion and pitting, luckily only on the outside of the piston barrel, caused by water getting into the case.

Pictures and assistance today from Connor, Thanks!

Hello there MFS,

wow, seems you found a really old one that probably never been touched by anyone accept the installer before you got to it,

good way to redirect your frustrations/anger/stress, as long as you keep your mind off the thing that is bothering you, do what makes you happy, matter it be reading, DIY, bicycling, or in your case, fixing floorsprings!

don't let drama from people get to you, as it can lead to health problems.

with me, when I get really upset (someone yell at me for something trivial) I think about closers as well, sometimes it may be mentally taking apart a rixson or dorma floorspring or a potbelly closer, if I had a huge amount of broken ones I would probably do the same you do if stressed.

in the one photo I seen about 10 or 11 floorsprings in a pile are those waiting to be fixed or are those waiting to be put in a floor.

ohh, in case you ever do decide to call Discovery Channel "Dirty Jobs" this one would be PERFECT!

as for the pitting on the cylinder and the broken off piece of the valve, it seems when people have a slamming door, their automatic instinct is to tighten down the closing valve and as a result, broke it off inside the cylinder on this one.

the pitting, water+metal+oil=sludge on the bottom of the closer and pitted parts that were in contact with the water. hopefully you were able to get this one back up and running and it last for 100+ years into the future with trouble free service.

the fluid black and thick like that, can't imagine it smell any good either when you took the access plate off to get to the spring and cylinder.

As there is so little information out there with regard to door closers, especially vintage and antique model floor springs, I thought I would start this blog.
