Here is a quick post of a before and after shot of a William Newman & Sons Patent Invincible Number 248 floor spring with a pneumatic check. I will post a more in depth report about these in the near future.

Hello MFS,

nice find! I remember you mentioning the pneumatic invincible floorspring (I think was the gallery) amazing how long these have been in the floor and not worked on until now!

about the one photo (where you took off the coverplate to see the cylinder) alot of oil in there, I guess either to keep the noises down (from the springs and rotating pin/shaft OR someone in the past thought it would help the dampening effect if they added some oil to make the pneumatic closer into a hydraulic one,

wont be first time hearing about a pneumatic being turned hydraulic, once got question (least a few times last year) someone wanting to refill a Norton door check and spring from 1880, people seem to not understand they are PNEUMATIC, NOT hydraulic!!

but I guess in today's age, it's hard to know what had oil and what was pneumatic especially if they know nothing about it,

the things you come across in the world of floorsprings/vintage closers! never a dull moment!

As there is so little information out there with regard to door closers, especially vintage and antique model floor springs, I thought I would start this blog.
