I must confess I may have made a mistake with identifying what I thought was a Smith's in an earlier blog post, it may in fact be a Cartland adjustable like the one below.

In the next blog post I will identify what i believe now is a true Smith's.

Hello Rod/MFS

about making mistakes, we are all human, we are not robots,

with many closers, especially many of the ones you find and work on) many it seems have same internals but different names, not easy to tell them apart if there is no coverplate on it or difference in the spindle shaft/pin, one example, ACME and Gibbons, especially when you shown me that one pic of all of them in back of your van.

as for the cartlands adjustable (band springs with cylinder in middle) I thought Achurch made similar closer but with bigger springs?)

to the untrained eye, some may think the 2 pneumatic door checks you put up on "christmas trivia" were same closer owend by 2 different brands at same time (era) no, just Newmann made their version in the UK and west europe, Norton made his in USA/Canada

forgot to mention about those 2 doorchecks, back then they may been soldered or cemented together (barrel to end caps) may have to use heat to get it apart one closer guy once told me they used graphite and mollasses to seure its parts, I don't know, I feel its soldered, just be careful, spring is under tension when closer is at rest if spring still works in them.

I also like the idea that you now have tape measure on closer when you take the pic, gives me an idea how big they are compared to my 2 concealed closers (Rixson #28 floor closer and Jackson transom closer)

as always, I love reading your blog about what closers your working on and where they came from and seeing their insides, always an adventure and never boring.

Merry Christmas Jess, your right it is often very difficult to identify some models. The floor springs I most often come across with the horseshoe shape springs are the Brittanic sometimes called a Leader, Leo or Forward. Smaller than this is the Cartlands adjustable (Newman's were still producing this model as late as the 1950's with its name changed to just a series of numbers, I will find out what those numbers are in the future) then the true Smith's which I have yet to show (Smallest springs of the three). For anyone reading this I will in the New Year have spring sets for the Cartlands and the Smith's. I am pleased you like the idea of the tape, I will continue to show models with it in the shot from now on.

As there is so little information out there with regard to door closers, especially vintage and antique model floor springs, I thought I would start this blog.
