Floor Springs Wanted

11/27/2015

Whilst Midland Floor Springs is a business concerned with the maintenance, repair and fitting of floor springs, the owner Rod Fathers is also an avid collector of floor springs, door springs, swing door centres, door closers and ancillary fittings.

If there is anyone out there who comes across any antique or vintage models of the above then please contact me on our site number.

If your a door fitter yourself for possibly Dorma, Geze or any of the big manufacturers or suppliers of floor springs please 'Think Before You Skip' and give us a call so MFS can keep as many out of the landfills as possible. We will always 'skip' round to collect any you have saved.

MFS is considering displaying and promoting a door closer and floor spring collection if anyone out there has any ideas or suggestions please make them known to us via phone, email or simply post in the comments. Many thanks from MFS.

St Peters School York

A few weeks ago I was called to the ancient city of York to repair and service an Earl 778, I have previously blogged about the Earl so I will tell you a little about York and St Peters.

First a little about York itself taken from this web site.
http://www.visityork.org/information/history-of-york.aspx

'York is one of England’s finest and most beautiful historic cities. The Romans knew it as Eboracum. To the Saxons it was Eoforwick. The Vikings – who came as invaders but stayed on in settlements – called it Jorvik. Its more recent history also characterises the city – its Minster and medieval architecture, its Georgian town houses, and its wonderful Victorian railway station.....'

[York Minster] '.....This magnificent building took 250 years to build and was consecrated in 1472. It contains England’s greatest concentration of medieval stained glass, including the great east window which, measuring 186 square metres, is thought to be the largest area of stained glass in the world.'

After driving past the beautiful York Minster Cathedral I found St Peters. This school is the oldest place I have ever worked, I found out it is the fourth oldest school in the world and unbelievably founded in 627 AD.

After replacing the Earl 778 I spoke to a few people and also found out not only the age of the place but also that Guy Fawkes was a former pupil. Who could not love my job eh?

Below is a piece from their website, a few quick snaps of St Peters School and a link to more information about the school.

'Older than the House of Commons, older than the Universities, older than the Lord Mayoralty, older than the House of Lords, older even than the throne or nation itself - Arthur F Leach, November 1892'

The Pelham Lewis & Grundy Ltd Nottingham

In and around Nottingham you will find many Pelham floor springs supplied by the famous Nottingham company of Lewis & Grundy ltd.

I have blogged on a few occasions about the confusion caused by suppliers and archetechural firms supplying their own top cover plates for advertising purposes, on this occasion however it is not just the name of Lewis & Grundy that was promoted they have also advertised different floor springs by the same name ie The Pelham to further confuse things.

Below are two pictures of "The Pelham."

The first however is in actual fact a 600 and the second is a 400 both of which I have covered previously.

Pneumatic Invincible

As promised here is the up date to the W. Newman & Son Invincible No 248's. In total MFS serviced and replaced the springs and pistons to 6 of these fine old Victorian closers.

There was some wear in the components but unfortunately funds did not allow for a full re-build. The Invincible's whilst not 100% are certainly much better than when we first attended site.

A number of the Invincible's had no makers mark on the top plate.

The setting for the Invincible door springs is the Emmanuel Church Southport, consecrated by Dr. Ryle, Bishop of Liverpool, on 16th April 1898. More info can be found here: http://www.emmanuelsouthport.org.uk/

As there is so little information out there with regard to door closers, especially vintage and antique model floor springs, I thought I would start this blog.
